Did you ever ask yourselves why does your street look the way it does? Why is your workplace designed the way it is? Who decides where your bus or highway will run through on your way? It's all about urban planning and land use policy. As geographer David Harvey once put it: Land use policies are not just technical matters; they are deeply political choices that shape the distribution of power and resources within society.Now imagine how urban planning works in a land already full of complexities and conflicts – Israelis and Palestinians, Mizrahim and Ashkenazim, religion vs secularism, New Olim vs native-born Israelis, rural vs urban, and so many more. Former PM Ariel Sharon saw Israel as a "spirit as unyielding as the desert sands, stretching endlessly towards a horizon of peace and prosperity". While it might seem like the sand is infinite, the land in Israel is definitely the one thing that is finite, and therefore, precious and very coveted.In this course, we will get to know the basics of urban planning and land use policies in general, and dive into its implementation within the state of Israel along the years and try to comprehend how Israeli society today, in all its shades, was very much shaped or influenced by the way the physical space was designed and allocated, focusing on a different aspect in each lesson. As urban planning is political, language is also political, and throughout the different topics, we will discover how reality can be shaped by combining terminology and urban planning. This course is for learners who are beyond the basic conversational level and can communicate in Hebrew in the present and past tense and form their own sentences. Cancellation Policy
Weekly courses: Up to seven working days before the course begins you can cancel upon paying 250 NIS cancellation fee. If you cancel within seven working days before the course begins till one day before the first lesson, you receive an 80% refund. If you cancel within one day before the first lesson till the second lesson of the course, you get a 40% refund. After the second lesson of the course, you are not eligible for a refund. Intensive Courses: If a student wishes to cancel their participation, they must notify This is Not an Ulpan by email within two weeks of registration and no less than seven working days before the course begins. We do not give refunds if not cancelled within this time frame. A fee of 200 NIS will be charged for any cancellation. Private lessons: A package of private lessons is valid for one year. After buying a package of private lessons, there will be no refund in case of cancellations. Notification of a cancelled or postponed lesson must be 24 hours before the time of the lesson. If notification of a cancelled or postponed lesson is given less than 24 hours in advance, the lesson will be charged in full. Sham Ze Lo Ulpan courses (organizations): A lot of administrative and pedagogical work goes into creating material and finding teachers for off-site, specialized courses. Thus, the cancellation policy is as follows: Two weeks before the course begins- no charge of cancellation. Within the two weeks prior to a course beginning- 20% fee upon cancellation.
